Do's and Don'ts of Pregnancy

Do's
  • Medical visits- Have a regular health check up. In first and second trimester, visit your doctor every month, every fifteen days in seventh and eighth month and every week in ninth month.
  • Eat a well balanced diet.
  • Take due care of yourself for your own sake and for your baby. No heavy weight lifts or strenous works are adivisable.
  • Pay attention to your breast, skin, teeth and blood circulation.
  • Inculde sufficient roughage in your diet like leafy vegetables, fruits, whole grains etc.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • If you are a diabetic, have a regular check up and keep your blood pressure under control.
  • Sleep for 8 hours in the night and 1-2 hours rest in the afternoon is important for the proper growth of the baby.
Don'ts
  • Do not curtail your diet even for short periods, especially eationg too little cereal is harmful for the baby.
  • Never take any drug without the advice of your doctor.
  • Smoking and drinking is harmful for the baby.
  • Have sexual intercourse with great caution by not puting weight on the abdomen?
Medical Visits
It is very important to visit your gynaecologist on a regular basis throughtout pregnancy. For the firts and second trimester that is, till six complete months, the visits are done once every month. For the next two months that is, seventh and eighth month, go to your doctor every fortnight that is, every fifteen days and the for the last month, the visit is done every week. On each visit, the pregnant lady is examined thoroughly with respect to blood pressure, weight gained, movement of the foetus, any sweling in legs, dietary intake etc.

Diet in Pregnancy
In pregnancy, a women needs excess amount of almost every nutrient. The calorie need increases by fifteen percent (300 calories more than normal) especially in the second half of pregnancy. The protein needs increases by fifty percent and iron need by twenty five percent above normal.
